We are very fortunate to have sourced another six of these rare, extra-large storage boxes - and their provenance is exceptional, as they were made for the Victoria & Albert Museum.

Constructed from plywood, they have drop-in lids and metal bound corners. Each is fitted with a pair of metal notice-plate holders for contents detailing, and with handle grips for ease of carrying. Barely used, the boxes were made more than 60 years ago to store artefacts belonging to the Victoria & Albert Museum, and were recently unearthed from a store room in Blythe House, West Kensington, London. See images. They make excellent at-home stacking storage and handsome coffee/side tables with ample storage for magazines and papers.

History

Blythe House (see images of exterior and interior) was originally built as the headquarters of the Post Office Savings Bank, yet more recently has been used as a store and archive by the Victoria & Albert, British, and Science museums (see image of boxes in use). In 2015 the government announced it would fund new storage for the museums and then sell off Blythe House, which is now in the slow process of being cleared of its contents.
