Colonial Folk Art Stag Trophy
£1,250.00
A rare and very striking deer head style trophy fashioned from papier-mâché-like composition and with reel deer antlers, that was most likely made in the 19th century in colonial India, during the days of The British Raj. The large antlers are sinuous and graceful and belong to the Sambar deer, a large deer native to the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia. The head is crafted from a form of papier-mâché, has a beautiful patina and is with its original painted finish. It has one glass eye topped by long eye lashes, the other it lost along the way, and the socket now wears an eye-patch. The whole is mounted on a hardwood base that has a hole for hanging.
This beautiful and very sculptural antique work of art is currently part of our Christmas window display and can therefore be viewed when visiting our store. It originally surveyed the top bedroom of The Tudor House.
Provenance: The Tudor House, Old Town Hastings, UK
Height 109cm / Width 59cm / Depth 50cm - measurements taken from extreme points of the horns and front of the muzzle.
Material: papier-mâché composition and deer antler
Date of manufacture: c.1880
Country of origin: Colonial India
Condition: one glass eye is missing and there are a few small surface cracks to the papier-mâché around this area, as with the tip of the nose, yet nothing untoward when considering its age.
The Christmas House
The Tudor House, Hastings, also known as The Christmas House, when it opened to visitors each December, had a place in the hearts of the many that passed through its wee front door. It was a magical experience, and was likened to stepping into a Brothers Grimm fairytale. The house is now sold and has passed into memory, yet its magical contents are not quite gone, as Alastair has saved the best for last - for our extra-special Christmas House Contents Sale.
The eclectic mix of primitive Eastern European furniture, English country furniture, folk-art and Black Forest antiques chosen for the house were honest and humble, yet always remarkable, and put together with a sense of theatre - to achieve a more contemporary take on the past. “It’s all about a careful mix, a telling of a story, and I hope others will find pleasure in the treasures I’ve collected and curated” says Alastair. “Select pieces that create surprise, that transform your space beyond reality!” This beautiful and very sculptural work of art would transform a room, and is surely straight out of a fairytale itself.
