We have been very fortunate to acquire another of these particularly fine Arts & Crafts gated wooden screens, and consisting of three open panels. This one being slightly taller than the previous. Each panel is constructed from turned wooden spindles that pass through wooden crossbars - the whole resembling railings. Each spindle is topped with a turned acorn-shaped finial. The execution of the joinery and the pared-back design is pure Arts & Crafts. This beautiful screen would make a great room divider - segregating your room, such as a cosy corner or desk area, without feeling loss of space.

History

The Arts and Crafts movement was spear-headed by William Morris, and emerged in late 19th century Britain in an attempt to reform design and decoration away from the excesses of Victorianism and the damages caused by the industrial revolution. Ornament was declared to be secondary to the thing decorated, and that there must be fitness in the ornament - if and when it was applied. Sound construction and a proper awareness of the quality of materials were also paramount. A new-found beauty in the utilitarian was discovered, revered and extolled – to which this beautifully designed and executed screen stands testament.
