Silver Ice Cream Coupe

Sold

A matching series of silver-plated officer's mess ice cream sundae coupes by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield.  Each stamped with JD & Sons letters and trumpet logo, along with a military arrow. They are of a lovely shape and weight, and we are selling them individually.

Our silver-plated EPNS dishes could once have been found in early to mid-century ice cream parlours, and in smart seaside promenade hotels, where an ice cream sundae came piled in tantalising pink scoops, topped with a wafer wedge, and accompanied by long silver spoons and crisp white linen. Their simple design and clean lines denote their functionality, and make them a perfect addition to today’s home table. The broad arrow mark located on the underside of the coupe (see image) designates its manufacture for the military. The Public Store Act of 1875 applied the arrow symbol to all metal objects supplied or issued by the War Office, and it can be found on metal boxes, flatware, musical instruments, medical tools, all manner of military equipment, and silver plated items supplied to the officer’s mess.

History

James Dixon & Sons was founded 1806 in Sheffield, and was one of the major British manufacturers of the Industrial Revolution. Makers of pewterware, electroplated Britannia metal, silverware and electroplated nickel silver, their products included hundreds of items for use in the kitchen and the dining room - from tea services, cocktail shakers and mixers to candlesticks. Their registered trade mark of a trumpet with banner was created and implemented from 1879, and is stamped on the base of our ice cream coupes, see image. J D & S were one of the foremost names in EPNS and hollowware – tableware, such as tea sets, tureens, food covers, platters, ice buckets and made many items destined for the office’s mess. Their silver plated tableware is now much sort after.
