A large, early-Victorian silver-plated serving spoon with fiddle handle and initial M monogram by Elkington & Co manufactured around the time of the Great Exhibition of 1851.

What do we mean by vintage flatware?

Elkington & Co are one of the most important names in English silver-plated wares, and held the Royal Warrants for Queen Victoria, King Edward VI, King George V, King Edward VIII and King George VI. Beginning life in 1836 as a company of silversmiths based in Birmingham, they soon discovered and patented a new way to electroplate one metal on to the surface of another; and by 1840 the production of their silver electroplated wares was well underway. Elkington & Co exhibited at the Great Exhibition of 1851 with enormous success, and by 1885 the celebrated silversmith and designer Christopher Dresser came on board and collaborated with their designs.
