A magnificent pair of Pugin style Gothic Revival brass candelabra, most probably made by Hardman & Co, Birmingham in the latter half of the 19th century. Each has five sconces with pierced gothic style galleries that are mounted on a similarly pierced hooped frame.  This is carried on arched supports embellished with vine leaves. The knotted and diamond quilted central stem is set on an ecclesiastical motif base carried by three lion-paw feet.  These are super-large and would make a very striking statement to any room - and they are particularly wonderful when used on a grand dining table.

Provenance: this important pair of candelabra are fresh to the market in 35 years, as they were purchased by Alastair Hendy in 1985 from Locke & England auction house, Leamington Spa, Nr Birmingham, and have remained in his private collection ever since.  

History

Augustus Welby Pugin (1812 - 1852) is one of Britain's greatest architects and designers. He pioneered an appreciation of medieval art and architecture and established in his polemical writings and design manuals the principles upon which the 19th-century Gothic Revival was based. Some of his finest work includes the interiors of the House of Lords, the Catholic church of St Giles, Cheadle, and his own house, The Grange, Ramsgate.

Hardman & Co

Pugin became famous in his twenties for his gothic designs on buildings in Birmingham, where he met John Hardman Junior (1811-1867), who became a lifelong friend and collaborator. In 1838 Pugin persuaded Hardman to leave his Birmingham button making business and form John Hardman Ltd.  This new company created metalwork to Pugins designs, and carried on doing so throughout the 19th century.
