Pair Railway Lanterns

Sold

A wonderful pair of mid twentieth century Adlake railway lanterns from the bygone age of old-school locomotives. Made by Lamp Manufacturing & Railway Supplies Ltd of Dorking, England, they were used to inform train drivers of set speeds when a workforce was on the track. A speed limit panel was slid in front of the lantern’s glass, and the lamp set atop a tall portable stand - see images. Originally they would have housed oil lamps, and they could still be used in this manner - or lit by a lightbulb.  Each lantern's steel housing has its original paint finish, and is fitted with a hanger, so each can easily be hung from a hook or chain.

Country of origin: UK

Date of manufacture: 1900 - 1930

Dimensions: Height 47cm, Width 43cm, Depth 22cm

Condition: in good condition for their age, with some rust pitting to the steel housing. See pictures. This item requires wiring.
