Embassy campaign secretaire

Sold

A very rare and important antique colonial two-part campaign secretaire chest of drawers that was once the property of the US Embassy.  We were lucky enough to purchase this impressive chest when it was sold by the US embassy during their move from their offices in Grosvenor Square to Nine Elms, London. Constructed from solid mahogany, it is fitted with brass inset handles, protective corners, straps, and keyhole mounts, and the whole sits on four elegant bracket feet. Its key feature is its magnificent pigeon hole desk that is revealed when opening the top drawer. This comfortably unclips at the sides and contains twin side drawers and one central long drawer, and a tooled leather insert to its writing slope. One can only wonder on how many ambassadors this secretaire has witnessed - and the diplomatic secrets it’s held.  This is a beautiful item of furniture and its provenance makes it a one-off.

Currently on display in our store.

Country of origin: UK
Date: 19th century
Style: Regency
Material: mahogany

Dimensions: Height 99cm Width 107cm Depth 50cm

Condition: Excellent with minor historical scuff marks and battle scars, yet these reflects years of travel history which add to its patination and value. It is possible that the desk’s leather insert and hinges have been replaced at some point in its life. The chest is constructed to separate into two halves for travelling, yet the two are now screwed together for more practical home use.  It is missing its carrying handles.  See pictures.
