History

Hotel ware silver-plated teapots emerged in the mid 19th century as a durable, affordable alternative to solid Sterling silver for upscale hospitality, utilising eletroplating on base metals such as nickel silver - known as EPNS. Popularized from the late 1800s through to the mid-20th century they conveyed luxury, and were heavily plated for durability, often featuring thick bodies to withstand industrial washing and frequent use in hotels and restaurants. Today, this hotel silverware is highly collectible, especially pieces stamped with the names of famous, defunct hotels, grand railway lines, or steamship lines. They are prized for their heavy weight, durability, and classic aged aesthetic.
