Antique Bread Board & Bread Knife
A Victorian bread board and bread knife, each carved with stylised wheat-sheaf motifs. The bread board is of sycamore, richly carved, and sits on three flattened bun feet. The knife has a wheat sheaf patterned handle with "Bread" carved near to its end; which is fitted to a carbon steel blade, marked "Adams Bros, Folkestone & Dover'. The knife has been much loved, has a wonderful polished patina, and the letters BREAD are now but ghosts in the wood.
Carbon steel offers the best cutting edge of steels, and is easily sharpened.
Dimensions of bread board: Diameter 29.5cm Height 2cm
Country of origin: UK
Date of manufacture: c.1900
Material: wood and steel
Condition: there are knife marks across the bread board - which are part of its joy; and there is a small split to the wood of the handle (see image), yet this is historical, adds character, and probably happened at the beginning of its life.
