A magnificent 1950s floor-standing dental lamp by Carl Zeiss Jena, a leading German manufacturer of optical equipment established in the mid nineteenth century. The rotational reflective lamp is mounted on an adjustable and retractable chromium-plated arm.  The tri-foot base is fitted with concealed wheels for ease of movement, has a handy foot-operated on/off switch, and a powder-coated metallic finish.  It is heavily weighted for extra stability.  The extending arm can be locked into position at varying heights, and it bears its original manufacturer’s name plate. See images. This beautifully designed dental lamp is a stunning example of mid-century industrial design and would work well in a living room, kitchen or bathroom.

History

German Carl Zeiss, born 1816, built microscopes, telescopes and binoculars in Jena, a town near Leipzig in Germany, from 1846 onward. See image. By 1906 the Carl Zeiss trademark (see image) started to appear on Zeiss products, and became a world-famous symbol of innovation and excellence.  From field glasses to observation, sighting and periscopic telescopes; through to signalling apparatus, searchlights, gun rangefinders, and planetarium instruments, the factory designed and manufactured every optic the world desired.  See image. Shortly after World War I, the popularity of the motor car escalated, bringing a demand for electrical headlights. Zeiss then moved into the production of spot lamps, fog light headlamps and other optical lamps for dental and surgical use - such as this rare dental lamp.

Condition: excellent with very slight scuffing and small marks to paintwork which is consistent with age - see images.

Note: the lamp has been rewired with an LED lightbulb-free fitting which casts a cool light. It could easily be refitted with a lightbulb fitting.
