Magical Victorian Feather Tree Dome
£1,250.00
A magnificent and very large Victorian dome of beautiful feather work, housing a tree with flowers, six balls, a bird and a tiny stalk carrying a baby, all created out of intricate wire-work and white feathers. A true magical garden of delights of flowers and fronds, all set in a Parian ware urn, on a faded dusky pink silk velvet covered base.
This is an excellent example of the Victorian's obsession of creating intricate and unobtainable worlds within worlds - and would have been created for a christening. The capture of avifaunal and botanical beauty, and the bringing of it into the heart of the home in miniature and using zoological materials the Victorians did brilliantly. It is rare to find such a stunning single-colour, decorative example, and in the truly wonderful condition that it is. Surely the inspiration for the 1950s Eastern European film The Singing Ringing Tree, where a prince must find the tree in order to win the hand of a haughty princess. With the help of the ruler of the realm of magic, the prince finds the precious tree; but he cannot have it until he fulfils one more condition: the princess must learn to love him before the sun sets. Well, we'd like to think so!
