Savoy Hotel Art Deco Side Table
A rare and striking Art Deco occasional table that is purported to have once been part of the 1930s bedroom furniture at The Savoy Hotel, London. Finished in a satinwood veneer, the recessed top holds an inset rectangle of protective plate-glass within its frame. Its gracefully tapered crescent-shaped legs are certainly in the style of past Art Deco furniture belonging to the hotel (see black and white images) and it could well have been made for one of the suites.
Art Deco at The Savoy Hotel
Originally opened in 1889 by theatre impresario Richard D’Oyly Carta, The Savoy Hotel was Britain’s first luxury hotel and boasted the innovations of the time, such as electric lighting and lifts, and constant hot and cold water. Over the years the hotel’s reputation for lavish design, luxurious furnishings and exemplary service have surpassed these rather humble beginnings, but it was the hotel’s revamp in the late 1920s and early 1930s that introduced the Art Deco details for which it has become famous. The hotel has seen updates to its suites throughout its history, and during the early 1980s many of the bathrooms and bedrooms were dismantled of their 1930s fixtures and fittings. We understand that this elegant occasional table was released from the hotel during this time.
Top Prices Paid
When the hotel underwent its major £210m refurbishment in 2007 - 2010, Bonhams auctioneers were handed the job of auctioning off in situ much of the contents, and staggering amounts were paid for Art Deco items, such as £7,200 for a window seat, and £10,000 for a pair of circular mirrors - both pictured here.
