J.Sainsbury's potted meats pot
A 1920s Sainsbury's ironstone pot branded "J Sainsbury's Potted Meats Superior Home Made". Usually cream in colour, this pot has become beautifully discoloured to an elephant grey with a fine web of black crazing. Sainsbury's was established 1869, when John James Sainsbury and his wife Mary Ann opened a shop at 173 Drury Lane in Holborn, London. By the mid 1880s the food store was making their own foods and own-brand products, such as potted meat which was dispensed in ironstone jars, such as this one.

Condition: heavy crazing and grey discolouration to glaze, yet this makes this pot unique and defines its beauty.
